Happy Easter

This is the choir at Kyesan Cathedral on Easter morning.  They sang the Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, and Agnus Dei from a Mozart mass.  Kyesan (named for its neighborhood) is the oldest Catholic church in Daegu, built in 1886.

The choir was really, really good.  Soloists in every chair.  The organist kept up via a TV monitor in the choir loft, which wasn’t really that far away, since the church is small but beautiful.  The congregation belted out the hymns with gusto, and luckily it was Easter, so every other word was “Alleluia” and therefore we got to sing along a bit.
After church, we were hosted by a Korean civilian and an American soldier for Sunday brunch.  We dined at the Evergreen Room at Camp Walker, the U.S. Army base in Daegu.  Camp Walker is a major administrative center for all of northeast Asia. The Evergreen Room serves a killer American Sunday brunch,  for which we were very grateful.

Brunch came with live entertainment:  a trio that, like the church choir, sang very well, but unlike the church choir, covered 70s and 80s American pop tunes, and were probably a little bored, so they appreciated it when we applauded for them and took their picture.  The keyboard player was mainly a DJ -- bass, drums, and most of the orchestration came from his laptop.
